17. 1-2mm of the gutta-percha is removed by a heat carrier.
18. A plugger without binding the canal wall is again used to compact the next layer of warm gutta-percha.
19. The heat carrier is again used to remove more gutta-percha 1-2mm alternating between transferring carrier and the plugger.
20. As the canal narrows, a smaller plugger is selected to compact in a more apical direction, i.e. #11-10-9-8. (Obtura Condenser use 4,3,2,1)
21. Each plugger is measured in the canal to access the level at which the gutta-percha is being removed and compacted. Refer to your note on the measurement make previously and stay short of these depths. A radiograph should be taken to evaluate the progress in compaction.
22. Vertical compaction progresses by alternating heat and compacting (packing rhythm)
until the smallest size is reached to a depth of at least 5-7mm from the apical opening.
A radiograph may be taken at this point to confirm the apical packing.
23. The back packing will be performed without any sealer, if a post and core restoration is not planned.
24. Trim off 3mm of fine-medium gutta-percha and place it into the canal touching the base
of the gutta-percha or Obtura II gun.
25. Use the heat carrier to shear off the gutta-percha about 2-3mm below the orifice.
26. Compact the warm gutta-percha down to the base with the smallest plugger.
27. As second piece is added in the same manner by repeating warming with the heat carrier and compacting with the smallest plugger.
28. Continue backpacking until the gutta-percha reaches to the level 2mm from the gingival margin.
29. Take a radiograph to evaluate the homogeneity of the backpacking.
30. Place cotton pellet Cavit into the access opening.
31. Remove rubber dam and take a post-operative radiograph.
